1983 - Dismantling of 240 ton Crane

January. A start was made on dismantling the 240 ton hammer head crane that had since 1911 been a land-mark on the Portsmouth skyline. The operation was completed by May 1984 and had generated a lot of interest. Many in the city were sad to see it go and felt that the heart was being torn out of the dockyard. The crane had a height of 200ft. and a cantilever of 260ft., and was operated by 3 men.
