1949 - Scuttling of HMS IMPLACABLE
1st December. HMS “Implacable” (see 1932), was towed out of Portsmouth and scuttled off the Owers lightship. Bombing up the main deck which continued to float. The ship had fought at Trafalgar and was the last two decker sailing ship in the world. She was formerly the French ship, Duquay Tronin. Laid down at Rochefort in 1797 and launched in 1801. She was captured by the British after escaping from Trafalgar.
