1940 - Dunkirk Evacuation

29th May. Armada of small ships set off for Dunkirk. The ships included destroyers, motor torpedo boats, minesweepers, IOW ferry “Whippingham”, Hayling Island Ferries, Pickford’s coasters, yachts and fishing vessels. An estimated 340,000 soldiers were brought off the beaches but many ships were lost, including IOW Ferry “Gracie Fields”.
