1913 - Launch of QUEEN ELIZABETH
16th October. The launching of super Dreadnought HMS Queen Elizabeth by Lady Meux, wife of the Commander-in-Chief. She later treated the men who built the ship to a night out at the Music Hall.
Queen Elizabeth was the first oil fired battleship, the first to mount the new 15 inch guns and the largest warship in the world at that time. She was the first of a class of five vessels that has been described as the finest battleships of their time. Other ships of the class were Barham, Malaya, Warspite & Valiant. (See 1947)
