1888 - Launch of MELPOMENE
20th September. The launch and christening of the cruiser HMS Melpomene was said to have been the shabbiest ever witnessed, for the Admiralty had forbidden any ceremony that was not absolutely necessary. The ceremony was performed by Miss Carpenter-Garnier.
