1852 - Loss of BIRKENHEAD
2nd January. The Troopship Birkenhead sailed from Portsmouth.
She was wrecked off Danger Point, South Africa on 26th February with the loss of 436 lives. The behaviour of the crew and Troops who formed up on the deck of the sinking ship so that the women and children could escape in the life boats has gone down in history as one of the noblest pictures in British history. Many of the crew came from Portsmouth where the tragedy was deeply felt and over £3000 was raised in Portsmouth and a further £3500 in London for the bereaved.
