1797 - Naval Mutiny at Spithead

15th April. Naval Mutiny at Spithead.

The mutiny broke out aboard Lord Bridport’s flagship Queen Charlotte at Spithead, lasting until the 15th May. It spread to the Nore on the 12th May and lasted there until the 13 June. The country had never been in greater peril in its long wars with France for without its navy it was virtually defenceless. (See 1654 and 1783).
