1775 - Launch of BERWICK

18th April. The 3rd rate ship of 74 guns, Berwick was launched from the Dockyard. She had a unhappy career when, being damaged during a storm in the Mediterranean and was proceeding under reduced sail when attacked by French frigates Alceste, Minerve and Vestale. What remained of her rigging was further shot away and with her senior officers killed, she was forced to surrender to the French on 7th March 1795. She was repaired and taken in to the French navy still bearing the name of Berwick. She was retaken at Trafalgar by the Achilles. She was anchoring off San Lucar but the French crew cut her cables during the storm that blew after the battle and she was driven ashore and wrecked 28th October 1805
