1762 - Launch of BRITANNIA

19th October. The 1st rate ship Britannia of 100 guns was launched from the Dockyard after being 11 years on the slipway. She was a sister ship to the Royal George that capsized and sank at Spithead in 1782. Nick-named “Old Ironsides”, she had an illustrious fighting career culminating at Trafalgar in 1805. She was re-named first Princess Royal on 6th January 1812 and two weeks later St. George for use as a convalescent ship. In 1819 the name was again changed to Barfleur and she was broken up in 1825.
