1758 - Purchases by Naval Victualling Office

The Navy Victualling Office was purchasing 800 hogs and 200 oxen a week which were processed into salted meat at the Victualling Yard. Hooves and offal were turned into portable soup for sick and wounded seamen. The “Universal Magazine” for this year also records that beef, port, butter and linen were landed at the Victualling Yard. Some 31,200 pigs and 7,800 oxen were slaughtered yearly to feed the Royal Navy.
