1213 - King John
King John issued an order to assemble a fleet at Portsmouth. The fleet of 500 ships sailed on 28th May with 700 English and Flemish knights under the command of William, Earl of Salisbury. The fleet attacked Damme (now called Bruges) which harboured a French invasion fleet of 1,700 ships, most of which were destroyed.
In July King John assembled another fleet and army to attack France but the barons refused to support him. The King however went to cruise off Jersey and returned to take vengeance on his unruly Barons.
