1950 - Winston Churchill receives Freedom of Portsmouth

11th December Winston Churchill receives the Freedom of the City. In his reply to the Freedom address he said: “Portsmouth is the main cradle of the Royal Navy. Portsmouth has always been the centre of the Naval power of Britain.”

The picture was taken during a visit to the Dockyard in 1941. Churchill was asked for the stub of his cigar by Arthur Beech, veteran of the Gallipoli landings during World War I, and employed as a Skilled Labourer / Hammerman.
