1946 - Farewell to HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH

All the ships in the harbour dipped their ensign in a farewell salute as the colours were hauled down for the last time on board the battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth after 34 years service through two world wars. The Royal Marine band beat retreat prior to the ceremony and finished with ’Auld Lang Syne’. She was moored at North Slip Jetty almost across the old slipway from where she first entered the harbour waters on 16th October 1913. The following month she was towed away for scrapping.
